Dear Thomas,
It’s Memorial Day weekend.
That won’t mean anything to you as it didn’t become a national American holiday until 1971.
You died before it was first known as Decoration Day, as that was declared a holiday just three years after the Civil War ended in the late 1860s. That Day was set aside to honor both sides of the war, Confederate and Union soldiers.
Now, we honor all soldiers on Memorial Day who have lost their lives for America. The holiday has a somber tone, but it’s also is a time to celebrate family.
I chose to hang the flag and the bunting inside this year. I kind of like seeing it each time I walk through the main rooms. Reminds me why this is even a holiday.
Until next time, your house’s faithful caretaker,
Marilee
I must admit, before today, I had never heard of Memorial Day. Growing up in the UK, we observed Remembrance Day with solemnity, but Memorial Day is unique to the United States. It’s a day to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces. The significance of this day speaks volumes about the culture of gratitude in America. Interestingly, while researching it, I came across SPSS Data Analysis Services UK. It reminded me of how diverse services—whether in analytics or traditions—are often underappreciated until we truly take the time to understand them. .
